The most common confusion I run into on the phone goes something like this: someone calls and asks the price of a “full detail,” and when I quote it they say, “for a car wash?”
It’s a fair question. The detailing industry has done a bad job explaining what’s actually in a real detail versus a car wash. So here’s the honest answer — what happens during a Full Service Detail at our shop, step by step, on a typical sedan or SUV.
A car wash and a detail aren’t the same service
A drive-through car wash takes ten minutes and costs $15. Its job is to remove visible dirt from the surface. That’s it. It doesn’t decontaminate clear coat. It doesn’t pull dust out of vents or stitching. It doesn’t clean leather, condition it, or handle pet hair below the carpet surface. It doesn’t do anything for your paint that you couldn’t do with a hose.
A detail is a multi-hour reset. Different scope, different result, different price. Once you’ve had one done well, you stop comparing the two.
The exterior side of a Full Service Detail
Roughly the first half of the appointment.
1. Pre-rinse with low pressure. Before any contact, we rinse loose dust off the paint. Touching paint that has fine dust on it — even with a soft mitt — installs micro-scratches. This is the #1 step every cheap car wash skips, and it’s why their cars look duller every year.
2. Foam pre-soak. A snow-foam pre-soak loosens road grime and bug residue before the wash mitt ever touches the paint.
3. Gentle hand wash with an eco-friendly polymer product. Instead of plain soap, we hand-wash with an eco-friendly polymer cleaner that softens the water, lubricates the surface, and lifts contaminants up off the paint so they rinse away instead of getting dragged across the clear coat. That lubrication is what keeps a wash from installing the fine scratches a careless one leaves behind.
4. Wheels and tires. Brake dust gets pulled out of wheel barrels with safe chemistry. Tires are dressed without slinging.
5. Bug, tar, and road-film decontamination. Front-end bug strikes and asphalt tar removed before the clay-towel pass so they don’t contaminate the rest of the surface.
6. Clay-towel decontamination. A clay towel lifts embedded contaminants — iron particles, sap, sprinkler minerals — that washing alone can’t touch. Run your hand across paint that hasn’t been decontaminated in a year and you’ll feel texture; after a clay-towel pass, it feels like glass. It’s an add-on with the Full Service Detail and comes included at the Premium level.
7. Wax protection (sealant or ceramic as an add-on). A real protection layer goes onto the clean, decontaminated paint. A quality wax holds up for a couple of months in Phoenix. Want longer? A sealant or ceramic spray (6–12 months) or a pro ceramic coating (years) are add-ons we’ll price out — but wax on freshly decontaminated paint is honest protection on its own.

The interior side of a Full Service Detail
Roughly the second half.
1. Full vacuum. Floors, seats, trunk, between and under the seats, cup holders, door pockets, the cargo area. Personal items have to come out so we can reach the surfaces — that’s the only thing we ask you to do before we arrive.
2. Compressed-air vent pass. This is a Phoenix-specific step that almost nobody else does. Fine desert dust packs into vents and seat stitching. We blow it out with compressed air before we vacuum, so the dust comes out instead of redistributing the next time you turn on the AC.
3. Carpet and upholstery shampoo and extraction (add-on). Add this on and a shampoo-and-extraction pass lifts the deep stuff a vacuum doesn’t see — embedded pet hair, ground-in dirt, food spills. Different from a spray-and-wipe. This is the step that pulls “five years of family life” out of the carpet.
4. Leather clean, then condition. In that order. Conditioning over dust just seals grit into the leather, which is how leather cracks. Phoenix heat is brutal on leather; a real two-step makes the seats look and feel like a different car.
5. Dashboard, console, door panels. Detailed by hand — vents, seams, switches, cup holders, every plastic surface.
6. Headliner deep clean (Premium / add-on). Stains, smoke residue, and dirt get treated. Headliners can’t be fully extracted without separating the fabric from the foam, but this cleans up most issues. It’s included on Premium, or add it to any interior service.
7. Interior glass. Inside windows are a streaky mess on most vehicles. Done right, they’re not.
8. Odor neutralize / steam sanitize (Premium / add-on). A treatment that targets the source — pet, smoke, food — rather than a fragrance that covers up. Included on Premium, or add it to any interior service.
The finishing pass
Door jambs, fuel door, and trunk perimeter. The edges that almost every wash and most cheap details skip.
Walk-around with you. Before we leave, we walk every panel and the cabin with you. If you see something we missed, we fix it on the spot.
How long the whole thing takes
About six hours for a sedan in average condition. Trucks, SUVs, and minivans run longer. Heavy pet hair, smoke saturation, or biohazards add time and an add-on, which we’ll quote up front before we start — never after.
The reason people book it
The thing customers actually buy isn’t a clean car. It’s the feeling of opening the door at the end and the cabin smelling and looking like the day they got the vehicle. Pre-sale customers want the resale number to reflect a clean car. Family customers want the car to feel like theirs again instead of like a hauler. Pre-summer customers want the paint protected before another monsoon and another July.
